The purpose of Real-Time Work Item User is to help Jira teams see who is currently viewing an Work item and who recently viewed or closed it. This improves collaboration, increases visibility, and helps team members understand who is actively engaged with the Work item in real time.

Examples of use cases:

  • Seeing which users are currently viewing the Work item

  • Identifying team members who recently viewed or closed the Work item

  • Improving collaboration by knowing who is active during discussions

  • Tracking engagement on important or time-sensitive Work items

 

Usage Guidelines

Understand Tracking Behavior

Real-Time Work Item User shows who is actively viewing an Work item and who recently interacted with it.
Use this information to improve collaboration, monitor engagement, and coordinate work effectively.

Interpret Activity Carefully

Viewer presence indicates that a user has the Work item open, but not necessarily that they read or acted on it.
Avoid making decisions solely based on viewer status.

The feature only uses:

  • Basic user identifiers (ID, name, avatar) provided by Jira

  • Timestamps required to determine activity status

  • Permission details to ensure visibility is allowed

 

Roles and Permissions

Permitted Users

  • Can view active and recent users on the Work item

  • Cannot modify tracking rules or system configurations

  • Are only tracked if they have permission to view the Work item

Jira Admins

  • Can configure the time window and tracking settings

  • Can enable or disable activity tracking where required

  • Can monitor usage and ensure compliance with organizational policies
